”I wrote my first novel—or rather, my first trilogy—when I was ten or maybe eleven. It involved magic, clear-cut heroes and bad guys, and scores of strange creatures. My summer days and weekends were filled with making up stories that resembled the movies and books I liked. I wanted to become part of them. So naturally I practised martial arts—not the tough kind, but the kind that looked cool on screen. I walked around with a homemade phaser and got myself a alter ego (Secret Agent Tom), transforming myself into someone more exciting.
I’ve noticed that the older I get, the longer and more uneventful my stories become. I have traveled far from my initial intentions, yet the joy of creating remains the same. I just find wonder in smaller and smaller things."
